The Dantari-swarm spreads! Facebook, SocialURL ::: A cry for social network help

By Gareth

Yes my social exodus continues! Witness me as I spread across the web! I’m keeping these seperate from my use of netvibes, videntity, del.icio.us and digg as they will be the topic of a different post.

Find me on SocialURL!

I especially recommend SocialURL for those of you, like me, who have friends spread over various social networks. This social mess, and the desire to mingle and try new features has led me to create many different profiles. While netvibes is a perfect homepage for me, SocialURL (henceforth SURL) makes a perfect homepage for me, for everyone else! Although I am tempted to use my videntity page and then have that link to my other profiles via relationships, but it’s a bit uglier. [I found SURL here on Mashable (RSS)]

On a semi-seperate issue, I can’t believe how so many social networks have both great and terrible features!

  • Myspace- so customisable, so ugly, so buggy [EDIT - don't forget MySpace has the greatest user base (worldwide) of all the social networks.]
  • Facebook- not customisable, a bit clunky but it auto-imports my blog posts! I had to create a widget and put it in MySpace blog for that, and bebo pfft. That is a great feature! Plus I like the “mini-feed” that’s a nice feature. If bebo had those 2, and the customisability of myspace, I’d be there 24/7. [Facebook is considered the "college kids" choice social network; EDIT- I've been using it more and I like the social timeline feature too, and the "I know this person via" option, it's easily the most networky network I've used so far.]
  • Bebo- very easy to use, some nice features, it’s like social networking made simple, I really like it, but it’s limited in its functionality/customisability [Bebo > MySpace in the UK and is rising in Europe]
  • LinkedIn- doubling as a CV, I think this will become a must have in future [Can you say Business 2.0? Because I can]
  • SocialURL- social features are limited, but it aggregates all my social spaces, which is how I’m using it. [On the right track, useful, users + features = w1nn3r]
  • Videntity- more on this later. I think it’s great that I’ll have a profile that’s also an openid, and it (like socialurl) allows limitless networking via its relationship feature, but it’s a little ugly. [OpenID!!! w00t]

Why oh why doesn’t one of these sites steal the ideas of the others and aggregate them? A site which allows you easily to import your photos from myspace etc, links to all your other onlines spaces and allows you to easily extract from them, RSS’s your blog into a note form-widget, keeps the mini-feed of your activities to make it semi-twittered, aggregates your friends across all those networks. Such a thing would easily gain traction because everyone bloody wants one. Combine it with netvibes so that you have a personalised homepage *AND* a universal virtual identity page. Omg? GIMME IT NOW GIMMEGIMME…gibber *gibber*

[Meta- There is a fantastic post about this last part here; seems I'm not the only one who thinks this is a good idea. Perhaps I should try explode since they're trying to achieve that. But no one seems to be doing quite what I'm suggesting. Why the hell not!?]

Henri, hey no problem I’m liking it! I have already sent several feedbacks, some of which have been implemented. I sense you have strong potential competition from here but I prefer the look of your website and its speed. Theirs has nice features but it’s very slow. Nice widget though.

I think I’ll do a more complete post on the two of them (and what I see as being good for social networks in general) soon :) .
