The trick always is to work back from things you know you believe. It seems to me that every belief we hold is a corollary of another, more significant belief. This can then be traced back to certain things you can’t say “I believe y because I believe x” (x=>y) but can only say “I believe this because of reasons x,y,z etc.”
This (ongoing edited) post will be an attempt to really stick down the ultimate convictions which imply all other beliefs.
So here’s one that’s clear from earlier:
I. Belief in Actuality.
I use actuality as opposed to reality since talk of alternate/subjective realities clouds the issue. Actuality := a reality whose existence is independent. That is to say, reality exists regardless of what anyone believes, sees or hears. Even if I see a car, it is either there or not in actuality.
Essentially I mean that, in my view, things are really happening. Regardless of arguments about perception or cartesian doubt, things really, actually exist. Whether we perceive them accurately is a different matter.
II. Actuality (henceforth interchangeable with reality) is physically perceivable up to physical limits.
This is 2 parts: 1 we can perceive actuality only with our physical senses. 2) our perceptions of reality are accurate up to the limits of our physical inputs. So if I see a car, it is really there except that, e.g. I see via reflected light and therefore into the “past,” albeit by minute amounts.
I’m debating whether II is sufficiently different from I to be a seperate core belief, since, in effect it is merely further discussion of what actuality is and what it means and therefore could be said to be part of I.
